3D scanning, reconstruction and design connect an existing component with its possible reproduction. At Retro-Design 3D, this process grew out of developing cylinder heads and four-cam engines.

From a cylinder head to an engine project.
The first cylinder head was scanned and reconstructed in 2012. Development continued through further components to the first complete four-cam engine in 2019. The image brings together digital design, casting simulation and physical components from this work.
For a new enquiry, we consider the available reference and the requirements of the finished part. A sample may be worn, modified or incomplete. Geometry, function and the required interfaces therefore need to be reviewed together.

Capture the reference
Share the sample, photographs, drawings and installation details. We discuss the information available for reconstruction and what is still needed.
Review the design
The captured geometry is considered alongside function, interface dimensions and manufacturing. The required design scope is agreed for the project.
Prepare manufacturing
The agreed design can provide the basis for manufacturing data and tooling. Specification, inspections, scope of supply, price and timing are clarified before the order.
What helps with an initial review.
- Component name, engine type and purpose of the project
- Photographs, available drawings and the condition of a sample
- Required quantity, intended scope and timing
We use this information to assess whether and how reproduction may be practical. An available drawing or sample does not by itself establish manufacturing feasibility.
